Handsome, evocative adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, with Kinski in her star-making performance as the strong-willed girl from a poor family whose fortunes rise and fall when she is foisted onto polite society. Long but engrossing. Oscar-winner for Cinematography, Costume Design, and Art Direction. Panavision.
